FOR PROFESSIONALS
Specialist consultation where psychology, culture and faith intersect.
Consultation for professionals who need additional cultural or Islamic-religious context when understanding a client, family, situation or intervention environment.

Who this is for
Consultation is for the professional or team carrying responsibility for a case, a service or a client relationship.
- Psychologists
- Psychotherapists
- Psychiatrists
- Counselors
- Mental-health teams
- Clinics and practices
- Healthcare professionals
- Educational professionals
- Pastoral-care teams
- Other professionals working with Muslim clients and communities
The professional remains responsible for the case; the consultation offers an additional perspective.
When consultation can help
The situations professionals bring most often:
- A religious practice or belief is unfamiliar, and its significance for this client is unclear.
- Culture, family expectation and psychological factors are difficult to separate from one another.
- Religious values appear to shape treatment preferences, engagement or communication.
- There is a risk of reading culturally what is clinical, or clinically what is cultural.
- A conversation with a client or family needs culturally appropriate framing before it happens.
- An institution is developing services intended to work for culturally and religiously diverse populations.
The question is the same in each case: what context is missing, and how much weight does it actually deserve? Assessment, diagnosis and treatment decisions remain yours.
Consultation framework
Separating what is psychological, what is cultural and what is religious.
Most of the difficulty in these cases comes from the three being treated as one. Consultation works through them deliberately, then puts them back together in a form you can use.
The religious dimension is read against formal training in Islamic jurisprudence and theology (M.Jur.), rather than general familiarity.
Psychological context
What is already understood within your own psychological or clinical framework?
Consultation starts from your formulation rather than beside it. What you have observed, assessed and concluded is the ground everything else is placed against.
Cultural context
Which norms, expectations, relationships or assumptions may be relevant here?
Family structure, obligation, migration history, community expectation and gender norms can carry weight that is easy to miss from outside, and just as easy to overstate from a distance.
Religious context
Which Islamic concepts, beliefs or practices require accurate contextual understanding?
Precision matters more than generalisation: what a belief or practice actually holds, how widely it is shared, how this particular person relates to it, and whether it bears on the situation at all.
Integration
How can that context be used while you retain your own ethical and professional responsibilities?
The outcome is usable understanding: context that informs assessment, communication and planning, all of which remain your decisions to make.
Professional boundaries
Stated plainly, because both sides need it to be clear:
- Consultation is contextual and specialist. It is not clinical supervision, psychotherapy, diagnosis or treatment.
- The responsible professional retains clinical and professional responsibility for the case throughout.
- Religious or cultural interpretation does not substitute for medical or psychological assessment.
- The aim is increased contextual understanding: better-informed decisions, made by you.

Formats
Consultation is arranged around the question rather than around a fixed package.
- One-off case consultation
- A single structured session on one case or question, where a specific piece of context is missing.
- Recurring professional consultation
- A standing arrangement for a professional who works regularly in these contexts.
- Team consultation
- A session with a whole team, where the same questions recur across a caseload.
- Service-development consultation
- Input while a service, pathway or referral process is being designed or reviewed.
- Training and consultation combined
- A training programme for the team, with follow-up consultation while it is put into practice.
To be confirmedThese are the forms consultation can take, not a published catalogue. Which formats are actually offered, and on what terms, is to be confirmed with Muhammad before launch.
